Public Ponderings
Weaned on improvisational theatre, I can talk about
almost anything, but here are three Public Ponderings
you may find of particular interest for conference or
festival breakout sessions and other public speaking
settings.
Marketing from Armageddon to Zen
Putting the community into community arts and putting
community arts into the community
There's more than enough books, articles, educational breakout sessions, and other resources in the
world that can give you specific promotional ideas, projects, and programs. I'll ponder about how to
create an organizational mindset that can convert every aspect of your organization into a well-oiled
marketing machine.
We give a lot of lip service to serving underserved communities, but we rarely really make the
committment to do so - it will change your organization into something else. Maybe something far
greater than it ever could be otherwise. Here's what I'm pondering: in order to put the community into
community arts, we first need to put community arts into the community.
Unalterable Principles of Community Theatre in the
21st Century (
Revised)
"Waiting for Guffman" be damned; there's pride, dignity, and artistic leadership in community theatre -
even your community theatre! "Hey kids, let's do a show!" is not an apology; it's a rallying cry to
re-establsih community theatre as an artistic force that contributes to shaping and defining American
theatre. I'll ponder these outrageous claims and more during this detailed presentation.

Because the management of any arts organization must
be as creative as the art it manages...
